When the team at Recycling Lives approached us for a bespoke team-building event, we knew this would be a memorable day. The charity, based in Preston, wanted to create a space where employees from their head office could bond with volunteers and colleagues from various regions. Their goal was simple: build camaraderie, share experiences, and above all, have fun. Their search for "PGL for grownups" on Google brought them to us at Independent Adventure, and after a few discussions, we were able to design an experience that blended their desire for excitement and engagement with the needs of their diverse team.
Designing an Event for All
During initial conversations, it became clear that the charity's director and organiser were particularly excited about Raft Building. They envisioned their team bonding on the water, paddling in sync, and embracing the fun of raft-building challenges. However, not everyone shared this enthusiasm for watersports, and as the event date approached, we realised that a portion of the group felt apprehensive about getting wet. To ensure everyone felt included and engaged, we took a flexible approach to the day's agenda.
Our aim was to cater to the adventurous spirit of those who were up for a rafting experience while providing equally engaging alternatives for those less keen on water-based activities. This delicate balance required careful planning and a little creativity. The Day of the Event: A Blend of Fun and Flexibility
On the day of the event, 48 participants arrived, buzzing with excitement and curiosity about the day ahead. Rather than sticking rigidly to the pre-planned schedule, we made the decision to run a **whole-group Treasure Chest Challenge** in the morning, which turned out to be a huge hit. This challenge brought out the best in everyone as they worked together to solve puzzles, unlock clues, and ultimately claim the coveted treasure chest prizes (in this case, chocolate! Teams had to communicate effectively, pool their diverse skills, and work under pressure—all essential elements for a successful day of team building.
Within 15 minutes of beginning the challenge, one delegate commented how this event was "so much better than last year's away day". (somewhere else :))
A hearty buffet lunch provided a welcome break and an opportunity for everyone to share stories from the morning's activities. Over lunch, we confirmed with the group organisers exactly how the afternoon would pan out and how many of their team would get out onto the water.
In the afternoon, the group that had originally been apprehensive about getting on the water found their groove with an archery session. While the rest of their colleagues enjoyed the raft-building experience, this subgroup thrived on the archery range, embracing the opportunity to test their precision and focus in a more grounded environment.
Meanwhile, the raft-building group had an absolute blast. Participants learned how to construct a sturdy raft using ropes, barrels, and wooden poles. The challenge wasn't just about the physical task of assembling a raft—it was also about fostering communication, teamwork, and leadership skills. Some of the highlights included watching the groups race their handmade rafts across the water, with cheers, splashes, and laughter filling the air.
Bringing Together Diverse Teams: The Power of Tailored Team-Building
The flexibility we employed on the day ensured that every participant was fully engaged and left the event feeling valued. One of the key takeaways from this event was the importance of adaptability. Not every team will have the same preferences, and not every person will enjoy the same types of activities. Understanding this from the outset allowed us to tailor the day so that everyone, whether they were in the raft or on the archery range, felt included and appreciated.
The event would have a lasting impact on their team dynamics. What began as a fun day out turned into a powerful bonding experience, where staff and volunteers had the chance to connect on a deeper level. This was especially crucial for their volunteers, who, due to the nature of their work, often only interact with the head office staff sporadically.
The structured team challenges were designed not just to entertain but to promote collaboration, problem-solving, and trust—all key ingredients for any successful team, whether in a charity, corporate office, or any other setting. Seeing colleagues step up into leadership roles, communicate effectively under pressure, and work towards a shared goal helped foster a sense of unity and mutual respect.
Why a Tailored Approach Works
For organisations like this charity—who want to bring together diverse groups of people—our approach allows for a high level of customisation to meet the specific needs of the group. The Treasure Chest Challenge, for example, is easily adaptable to different group sizes and skill levels, while the raft-building activity remains one of our most dynamic, engaging challenges, perfect for those who crave a bit of adventure.
This event is a great example of how flexibility is key in team-building events. We listen closely to the goals and concerns of the client and ensure that, no matter the personal preferences or activity levels within the group, everyone leaves feeling like they contributed to the success of the day.
From a logistical standpoint, this event also highlights the importance of communication between the organisers and the facilitators. Our team worked closely with the charity to make sure we understood their vision, while also providing expert guidance on how to structure the day to maximise both engagement and enjoyment.
What Your Organisation Can Learn from This Event
If you're a PA to the Company Director or HR manager looking to organise a corporate event, here are some key takeaways from this experience that can benefit your team:
1. **Customisation is Key**: Every team is different. Whether you have some water-loving adventurers or others who prefer to stay dry, designing a flexible event ensures that everyone feels included and valued.
2. **Engagement Drives Success**: Team-building events that focus on active participation create a stronger bond between team members. Choose activities that require cooperation, problem-solving, and communication, as these translate directly into better workplace dynamics.
3. **Mixing Fun with Purpose**: The Treasure Chest Challenge and Raft Building are great examples of activities that are both enjoyable and purposeful. Your team will have fun, but they'll also develop essential skills that they can take back to the office.
4. **Plan for Inclusivity**: Not every participant will be excited about the same things, and that's okay. Plan your event in a way that offers alternatives or varied challenges to ensure that everyone feels engaged, regardless of their preferences.
